Obstetric Anesthesia
What is Obstetric Anesthesia?
The day of your delivery may be one of the most memorable experiences of your life. In preparing for childbirth, it is essential to understand your options for pain management during labor and delivery.
While some women give birth without anesthesia, you may find that anesthesia provides you with greater control over the labor and delivery process.
The contractions of your uterine muscles and the pressure on your cervix may cause discomfort during labor. In addition, you may feel your baby’s weight on your bladder and bowels, as well as pain from the birth canal and vagina stretching during delivery.
Every woman experiences contractions differently. From discomfort in your back to pressure in your pelvis, cramps can manifest in waves. Women may choose anesthesia for pain relief despite the fact that the intensity of the pain may be manageable, due to the duration and persistence of the pain. Your discomfort may be influenced by a variety of factors, including:
- The size and position of your baby
- The strength of contractions
